Watford Street House Fire

posted on

Firefighters from Pageland, High Point Fire, and SandHill Fire Departments responded to a report of a house fire on Watford Street in Pageland. First arriving responders found a single story wood frame home heavily involved in fire. Firefighters dressed in hot heavy protective gear, breathing air from the tanks on their backs and dragging a heavy hose line entered the burning home and began attacking the fire. A second hose was deployed and additional firefighters entered the home to continue extinguishment efforts as well as beginning a search for any occupants that may have been in the home. As firefighters continued to battle the fire on Watford Street alarms began sounding for a house fire on Kirkley Road near Jefferson. This resulted in all of the SandHill firefighters as well as part of the Pageland and High Point firefighters leaving the fire on Watford Street to respond to Kirkley Road. Lanes Creek Fire Department was called to provide additional man power on the scene while firefighters from Ruby Mt. Croghan Fire Department stood by at the Pageland Fire Station in case another fire occurred. The heat of the day coupled with the oven like conditions inside the home took its toll on firefighters preventing them from working more than 10 minutes before having to remove their protective gear to cool off. Med Shore EMS was on scene treating several firefighters for heat stress and one firefighter for a cut on the arm. All were treated and released on scene. Preliminary indications are that both the Watford Street and Kirkley Road fires were deliberately set by the same person. An arson investigator from the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was called in to investigate the cause of the fire
