Woman suffers serious injury at grass fire

posted on

On Thursday, March 13, 2014, an 80 year old woman suffered serious burns when she fell while trying to extinguish a grass fire in her yard on Guess Road outside of Pageland SC. Volunteers from High Point Fire district responded with a two brush trucks and two engines to the fire and arrived to find that a mobile home had been ignited with winds driving the grass fire toward a second mobile home. Firefighters advanced a hose past the burning mobile home to stop the grass fires advance just as it reached the second home. Firefighters were then able to turn their attention to extinguishing the burning home while one of the brush trucks stopped the fire as it was beginning to advance through the woods. South Carolina Forestry was called and responded with a dozer to cut a fire break through the woods. The injured woman was treated on scene by First Health EMS Paramedics and transported to CMC-Union in Monroe. The fire appears to have been started by wind-blown embers from a fire pit used to burn household garbage.
