Vehicle Crash with Entrapment

posted on

The driver of a Toyota Corolla suffered life threating injuries in a vehicle crash on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at 8:48 PM, at the intersection of Hwy 207 and Landsford Road, north of Pageland SC. Responders from the Pageland Rescue Squad, High Point Fire District and First Health EMS arrived to find that the Toyota had been hit on the driver’s side by a Dodge Ram pickup truck. The force of the impact collapsed the driver’s side door and door post onto the Toyota’s driver, trapping him in the vehicle. Both vehicles left the road, stopping parallel to each other with the driver’s side of the Toyota against the driver’s side of the pickup. Rescuers used the winch on their crash truck to pull the Toyota away from the pickup. The hood was pried open so the battery cables could be cut and the car was stabilized with wooded blocks called cribbing. Using a technique known as cross ramming, a hydraulic ram was used inside the car to push the door post and door away from the driver. Once that was accomplished the “Jaws of Life” rescue tools were used to remove both doors and the door post on the driver’s side, freeing the driver who was treated by First Health Paramedics and transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte NC. The crash is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
